The increased productivity (less time required to generate an age relative to conventional methods), ability to circumvent the multiple-handling steps previously required for double dating (SHRIMP/LA-ICP-MS U–Pb and conventional (U–Th–Sm)/He), (U–Th–Sm)/He and U–Pb ( trace elements) single crystal double dating of zircon and other U-rich accessory phases.

Zircon grains of known and unknown age (‘standards’ and ‘unknowns’, respectively) were arranged in a grid on Kapton polyimide film on a clean glass thin section slide and firmly pressed into a 25 mm round piece of Teflon (Du Pont PFA, Type 6000LP) preheated on a hot plate at 230 °C until softened.
